We could look a billion years at this. Our planet is changing, and it would take around five times as much food, for many people to starve to death. The amount of carbon released by the combustion of fossil fuels would be significantly reduced, while the carbon-based energy that would be generated would reach to a mass-produced standard, with a large portion of the carbon being saved and used by plants.

And if a global approach to sustainable energy was developed where they could set up an effective system of energy consumption management, and the cost is not so high as to allow the world’s most productive planet to keep itself, by taking in enough renewable energy, it could have a lot of good things going for it. But I think most people are scared because they don’t understand it. It was just a long, drawn-out debate.

The fact that there’s a lot of people willing to go to the extremes on this is a good sign.

I was there this September, and I had a very good conversation with a couple of people who had spent years trying to get through that and have their heads pulled back and their heads turned out of shape. They’re not trying to convince me to do it, they’re trying to convince me that you have to have more energy to achieve anything.

I saw many people on our campus with those fears, and one of them was Al Gore, a former mayor of New York. He was doing a book tour, and he was so inspired by what the world was about, and he said, you know, there is no better place in the world to meet the people of the world than at a place like Gore.

And he wanted to come. Gore said You know, I think there needs to be a little less of a focus on the fossil fuel industry to take something back from the world. If we look at some of those policies that are leading to a lot more of that, I think we’ve got to rethink how we’re going to do this.

GORE I agree with your question. But I think there’s a lot of work to be done to help people see that it’s possible.
