The latest polls on Wednesday show the Conservatives struggling to gain ground after a disastrous night of polls over the weekend. The party is on course to win the next election, which will be marked by an unprecedented drop in opinion polls as more and more voters turn out to cast their vote for them. The Lib Dems, who have struggled to find support on the ground and are hoping to reclaim Labour’s leadership this fall, are also on course to remain in government because no one outside of Tony Blair has yet to deliver their party leadership bid.

The polls are particularly striking as it emerged from the weekend that Theresa May was to deliver her fifth term in office at the weekend, while David Cameron, who was re-elected to the House of Commons the following day on the back of a surge in Ukip votes, was to take over to replace her.

A Lib Dem survey shows that voters are turning out to back Mr Cameron, who won a majority of 61 per cent of the vote, a result that could change the result of next week’s general election. The poll also found a drop of just 0.4 per cent in the poll of 1,000 members of the public last Friday, to 37 per cent.

The results are particularly significant as the Lib Dems are also facing internal divisions among their coalition partner on two of four key issues that could be key to their leadership in the campaign. The first is immigration, and the second is immigration reform. On both, a poll of 2,000 members of the Commons last Friday found that only 29 per cent of Lib Dems believed immigration reform was worth the party’s support and that only 17 per cent believed it was necessary.

David Cameron will make his first foreign trip on Tuesday. Labour will hold an emergency meeting of MPs at 10 Downing Street on 21 February following which Mr Cameron will sign an agreement with Mr Farage that would see him meet Prime Minister Theresa May for four days.

We believe that an election for Theresa May means a vote for David Cameron who will bring forward a Conservative government and a coalition Government together that will ensure freedom of movement for people around the world, Mr Cameron said on Wednesday.

Labour said Mr Cameron had done the right thing by staying on in Downing Street. It said Mr Cameron’s decision is out of line with the wishes of Labour as a whole, and said he was
