Couples of men who were raped and abused by Muslim men in North Africa often found their own stories of being trafficked across a continent to their next destination. In some cases the migrant women and girls ended up in jail or worse after being sold as sex slaves by Islamic extremist gangs.
We didn’t get much money, said Mohammed Zayed, a 22-year-old from Cairo who was jailed since 2013.
Last month, Mohamed Ibrahim was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in a car-bomber ring that helped two other gang members to get raped outside a church. The trial had been scheduled for December.
The four men accused in Ibrahim’s case were convicted of a dozen different crimes but were released in June after a year of confinement. It was only in his second court appearance, after being rejected for a fifth, that a second man, Mohammed Abdullah, was sentenced.
They were tried in 2012 after they pleaded guilty for planning a drug trafficking ring that went from Sudan to Morocco to the United States and then went from Libya to Egypt.
The five men convicted included Omar Baghafi, a 23-year-old from Libya, and Muhammad Mohamed, 23, of the Eastern Province of the Arabian peninsula, and Ali al-Saddiq, 27, from Pakistan. Mohamed was one of about 200 people arrested in 2011 and released three years later. They said Ibrahim had provided them with prostitutes.
