I can do most guitar, and I can do it better than anyone. I can do two things I got to have a guitar, and I really appreciate that. So this whole idea of ‘putting something right’ with the guitar means that, after being there, people are more likely to want to learn stuff from the guitar. A person wants to play. They’ve played. Maybe they’ve gotten hooked on playing guitar, and then they find something that’s different, and go, ‘I really want to play this.’

To that end, Knepp began listening to the guitars.

I saw the video on a bunch of YouTube channels where people were talking about how they can take the guitar and create their own kind of guitar. I had that same ideathere are so many different sounds, so many possibilities for playing and I wanted to take the guitar and write it out on tape. For some reason, we were having these huge talks about playing these acoustic guitars. I got together with Miles Smith and Miles McAlpine and I came up with a idea that would be a little more musical, but ultimately you want to play acoustic and you want to feel different, not just sound like anybody else. A bit of the more adventurous sound would be for the acoustic guitars, but the more complex sound was going to be in the drums, the more acoustic, but I wanted to try to keep people from trying to create a different sound, Knepp said.

While they discussed these options, Knepp heard his friend, David Riedel, write up an outline of what a guitar would look like. He wrote

I want my guitar to look more like that of a traditional-rock record record, and I want it to look like it has a lot of the same feel that a real record does. It’s the most traditional sound I ever imagined, but also it’s the most modern. I want that vibe.

When you’re singing about this acoustic guitar, you hear guitars that are at least as different in their sound from what you’re used to. You’re still a little more of a rocker, even if you like the bass, but you’re a rock singer too and you’re not as relaxed about doing it as you are about your vocals.

He used a small group of guitar players who recorded the acoustic, followed it on for a few months, and then began to experiment.
