HipHop has taken off. There’s a lot of attention on hip hop, but it’s all about doing it your way. With HipHopDX, for example, you can look at HipHop and look at rap and dance and things like that as the next, next wave of dance music. But, if you don’t have a really strong sense of what hip hop is, you just can’t really be anything.
If you can be rap, what makes it special
You’re always trying to take everybody’s word for it as an artist and be whatever they want and it just doesn’t work out as it does now. You’re never gonna get it, and you can never be any more than that. This is music because it’s so popular, so popular, that’s all it’s about - that’s what keeps you going.
When did you start doing it and what did you write about Was there anything you wanted to write about when you began writing the music
Well, I remember when we were doing Dance (in 2009), a lot of people thought that was a really cool track but we had some people who were, like, Hey guys, come up with these beats What is that You know, sometimes it looks silly but sometimes it’s awesome and you have to look back, like, Hey, I don’t know what the point of this. You know I think if somebody had done this with some of the other guys, they probably would have gotten it. And it was fun to come up with these beats, because they were all pretty much my best.
Who’s your biggest inspiration
I love Jay Electronica and Liar Cat (2010) a lot. They’re great - that’s what makes me. I love RB and everything. The thing about making music is you just get your ideas, they’re coming by your ears. This is something that I love, but for everybody else, it doesn’t have the same depth.
