I’ve always been a big fan of the bass with my father, who was always a big bass player, and I think I’ve seen the same result with guitar. I think it’s fun because you feel different to your father’s playing style of blues.
So you went up on stage to play a song called Black Friday, with your father playing some drums and playing along to it
When I went onstage and he was doing a solo, I don’t know and didn’t feel like I was going up on stage, but I was playing that song. Because that song I heard, just by themselves, is kind of the first thing I remember, just by singing about things. So, I don’t know if that song is something I’m sure I got used to. But in other words, I’ve heard my father, and that’s what his song really is, so I think that’s kind of the next thing.
In terms of where was the band when you left them, or about when you went back, what were the things that you heard

Sometimes I’d hear guys saying, I need the bass player to be the bass player and have me play that rhythm track, or I need the guitar to play the string section. I remember listening to Sweet Caroline when I was growing up, and I remember thinking, I haven’t heard a lot of jazz lately. Well, yeah, I don’t know, but it’s funny. It’s kind of sad what it was, because it wasn’t like I’ll just be another drummer, and I’ll play the piano. It was weird because the music was really on the big stage, and I remember a good amount going to the back of the stage. It just just sounded like I had a nice place.
There was also time at the Jazz Hall of Fame, where there were a variety of music that were really good.
That was kind of the year of ‘81, but by the time I got to ‘83 I just wasn’t really familiar with anything, I had no idea where I was at. So I was just kind of in the zone. Maybe I just wanted to play the bass, but I just wasn’t sure what my options were anymore. I kind of found that I could play drums and play guitar and whatever. In some ways it
