One time I was going up to the train platform at the corner of O’Connell Street and Diversey Avenue, he recalled. I saw a person with a big gun outside an old dumpster with a bag over his head. I asked whether people would use guns if they were going up there in their own lives.
My dad said, ‘There’s not enough people up there for you to handle, don’t you understand’ I said, ‘No no.’ He just said, ‘No, I don’t know if you can do it or not.’ When I asked him what he was getting at about the selfishness of people taking guns from other people, he explained that they had to get used to it. A woman in a hoodie walked up and pulled out a large one-shot pistol from her trunk. If he took it from her, she would be in shock. Oh, she was saying. You can’t take it from anyone, no matter how you want to kill them.
Why did we not notice at the time that there was a police presence on O’Connell Street
I didn’t see the police, said John. The police were there in the dark and in plain view. I didn’t see them.
The police officers at the time had no idea why the people walking up and down Diversey Ave wanted to shoot so many people. A young white couple who had just left a neighborhood meeting when they were shot said We said that they were in the dark and there wasn’t any way they could find her. Another neighbor, Bob, was walking his dogs when a police officer walked down the street and shot him in the arm. He says he was struck in the head and had to be taken to the hospital for a minor wound to his scalp.
According to police, the shooting was in response to a disturbance in their neighborhood. They say that one of the officers who had taken their man home called 911 to report that his home was disappeared. They say that this officer had to be pulled down and killed.
Why did we not see that on the morning of October 20, 1981
It would have been the first day of school on campus when you were in the front of the house, said John. We got home. We didn’t know who was at the school until the next morning. I remember saying, We know you are
