Roulin’s story is not unusual, considering that he was the sole survivor of a manhunt for his family, with his wife, daughter, and grandparent. During the 1980s, he lived with his mother on an east coast ranch with his three children. That changed. They were more excited to get back in the car than to go through security, he says. All of a sudden you’re so happy, you’re like, ‘All right we got it.’ When the family fled from home, Rouge moved back to South Carolina, where he met the wife of the former state police officer who was later killed in the line of duty.
Roulin’s life is intertwined with that of a man who grew up in the rural, rural, high-crime suburb of South Carolina, where he played golf and became involved in basketball and soccer. With the help of his family he earned a law degree and became one of the country’s most successful lawyers. He left his homeland in 1999, where he went to law school in Los Angeles, where he earned a law degree and moved back and forth to the South Carolina highlands.
He was convicted of the murder of his wife and then-girlfriend’s four children, and sentenced to death in 1992. At the time of his death, he had also killed himself. He was the only black person on death row.
As a state legislator, Rouge once became a symbol of a new generation of young people who are taking on the injustices of race and gender in the criminal justice system. In 1997, he was honored by the American Bar Association, and was one of several members of the city commission to recommend legislation that would establish a policy for women of color in state criminal justice systems. My life, of course, will take forever to define, he says, but even in a lifetime it will be better for me than I was, because it will be harder for the rest of society to know who they are and how that makes people feel about them.
