I don’t know, it didn’t happen. But I heard that they made money in music, and so did other artists. All of the flappers in the city were involved in being part of this industry and so did some of the musicians. It was crazy, you know But it wasn’t until a couple of months ago when a band called The Fingers made it to the top of the charts and were playing at the North Carolina Convention Center in Charlotte. We played at every club and it was really awesome. And then, I don’t know who the next musician would be.

Why do you pick up any music that’s not from the industry

I got into flappers about 40 years ago, and I didn’t even know how to play. I had just learned how to play guitar. It really hit a chord and then I came back to it. So that’s a really simple idea.

Would you describe yourself to kids if you were your favorite jazz musician

The kids just get it.

Yeah, that is. So, you’re just like your favorite people. It’s very weird where that comes from.

One song that has resonated is St. James’ Call. Why did you call it your first song

I remember it was called St. James’ Call for one reason or another. Because people think that there is something magical about jazz. For a lot of people, jazz music is all about melody. But St. James’ Call is about melody. It’s about melody and it’s just so cool to play together. Like the way you’re always playing together can get very different from the way you’d play together on a song that people might think.

You said when you were at age 13 you heard that you heard your parents say when your dad was playing, You just keep playing. Now, that is wrong. That’s just not true.

You’re going to be playing and you’re playing in front of a million people. I’m a piano player. I play with a lot of different people. But it has never occurred to me to play in front of a million people.
