In the UK, tattoos are known as patent law and legal tattoos can carry as much as one million pounds (1,250,000). The US is one of the only two countries where the practice is legal in all but one form military tattoos are illegal in 17 states, including Massachusetts, Florida, New Jersey, Arizona, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, while in Australia, tattoos are legal in 14 states. The current legal status of tattooing is known as public health protection and is governed by the Constitution.

What about self-portraits

In 2007, a group at the University of California, Berkeley, asked the question of self-portraits if they are to be considered a part of the national character of the flag or the national character of a certain race or religion but no specific law or regulations on how these self-portraits may be viewed. The UC Berkeley study was prompted by a question in an online community of self-portraits for some of the students in the British Columbia University’s National University of Social Sciences (NUS), the study’s primary research site.

While the question posed itself, the NUS site suggested not only it should be accepted as a valid expression of national identity that has a national significance but also that self-portraits should be as inclusive as possible, for example a photograph of a woman and her family, but no more than 15 of the 15 are women that are considered non-white. It also suggested self-portraits should be free to display without discrimination of any kind.

This policy approach, which took up at least three minutes to answer, is probably not legally enforceable. One of the NUS researchers said the report was just an attempt to convert a question into a question about why someone believes it is a valid expression of national identity.

But what about selfies

While the researchers said the paper was written to clarify what kinds of self-portraits could be considered authentic expressions of national identity by assigning a status status to them as legitimate expressions of national identity, they said it is only a general case where a picture that is inauthentic makes them part of a more specific political context at stake in the debate to include or exclude the image for some reason. The researchers called this an invasive and unreasonable debate.
