In case you had forgotten, Jesse wasn’t always the tallest person on the team.

In 1997, Jesse was born at 18 years old – a year before former teammate Larry Womack was born. He had a brother, Jack, who is about 6’10 (2.3 inch) and weighs 160 pounds (113 kilograms). Larry, a member of the Kansas State coaching staff and a teammate at Missouri, became the team’s All-America during the 1999 season. He was named honorable mention all-conference, played all three seasons, played in 12 games (three of them with three first-team starts), and played for the Tigers on three occasions in a season in 1992.

When the team moved to Arizona with its two first-round draft picks in the 2005 NFL Draft, Jesse was named an Arizona State player of the year for 2012. In his three seasons, he averaged 11.8 yards per snap. He was also a Big Ten All-American once. The best player on the 2008 season was Aaron Gordon.

In 2009, Larry became Arizona State’s all-time leading scorer with 14.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, which was his seventh-highest season.

Larry had a rough run in 2013 while leading the Wildcats after he was benched and being injured. He went on to help the Wildcats win 15 games in a row – that’s 12 straight windays.

During his tenure at the university, there’s a story he heard about how Jesse got the nickname Jesse of the Ducks, an insult that eventually spread through the school and helped guide other Wildcats to NCAA championships.

We learned about the nickname’s origins here on the school’s website

When we wanted to bring Jesse to Arizona State, we needed a true athlete with an attitude and personality that was consistent with what he was about. We needed someone who did good jobs, who played the team, and was willing to take the high road on whatever it took to make it.

Jesse’s nickname will be named during Friday’s game against No. 15 USC. He will be named after a teammate, who later became a coach, who eventually became a player.

With Larry still on the staff, he’ll be on the coaching staff alongside the athletic director and the team’s defensive coaches – both former assistants. He replaces John Chavis, who also won the Arizona Super Bowl in 2002 with a 14.2 rating.
