The images below show a number of female demonstrators dressed in Muslim clothing
They have since been removed by police with footage of their faces visible to the public for fear of spreading fear. Two of the seven attackers are of Syrian origin.
Several other women wore long, tattered, and black Islamic head scarves, both carrying assault rifles and carrying assault shields. Two protesters were shot by police in the same place, but were later found dead.
A Syrian police spokeswoman told reporters on Monday the women were leaving a mosque on Wednesday morning when two men approached and threatened them.
The gunman shouted ‘you are going to kill us’, before the women shouted ‘why are you going to kill us, you will never leave anyplace safe’, police spokeswoman Adnan Al-Awaqq told AFP.
The activists were told to leave their homes after the group of at least 100 women and children, mostly civilians, ran into the crowd.
A police spokesman described the attack as a ‘terror attack’ which had happened in the past.
The activists came under fire from police.
A government spokesman tweeted ‘This is an attack of hatred towards the Syrian people. Our goal are security and peace in the city, while the country under attack by terrorist groups. All people involved have been given an answer that they cannot continue to take on extremists as they seek to impose their ideology.
‘We strongly condemn the attack and we are working to prevent further incidents such as this.’
Al-Awaqq told AFP that the men were not radicalised Muslims who were trying to incite a riot, which sparked a counter-attack.
