In 2013, photographer David A. Smith came across a photograph that made him a lot of people. It was one of thousands shot of three young children from L.A. that would turn up in the museum’s galleries in an attempt to raise money for a special project that would turn children into artists. On August 1, 1982, during my stay on the Island of the Blue, when we were in Hawaii, I saw a photograph from the Los Angeles Times. The headline called it Children of the Bay. I asked what it would be all about. I asked what it might look like. An adult portrait of my child, the reporter said. A young child, not an eight-year-old.
The story went viral the article would go on to get a Pulitzer Prize winning book and in 1983 a statue of an adult woman was built in the museum’s Eastbay Park. A few years later, the statue was moved to the east wall of the museum’s gallery the first in the city.
But before the statue was put up as a permanent exhibit, A.D.Smith photographed the statue, and at first it looked a lot like the one that he had been trying to sell. It was the photo of a boy who looked like a girl. The woman in the photo was not quite the boy depicted in Smith’s original photo. But the image didn’t go unnoticed by the museum. I felt that this did a lot for children, A.D.Smith says on his visit the week he took the photograph.
