Miguel Sure, yes. In my old school, I had only five or six piano lessons a week. But if I learned to play, I’d do that in a four-piece orchestra, so when I was at school I’d just drop the kids in, listen to them play.

The lessons are about finding the right chord, the right melody, the right tempo. We were learning these songs with only our own hands. So when we were playing them, our brains were running off of each chord. The rest of us were making our own choices and were playing from a different standpoint and doing a different thing. We are basically doing something different every time we play a thing.

Why is that

Miguel Because sometimes we want to play in a way that is kind of like a jazz piano or something. That doesn’t just work on the surface. It works within the context of your own playing and in the context of what you do and what you’re doing. And even though we’d just learned, we really didn’t get into that. The thing about piano is that you learn what you like, as a listener what you like is what you like most or what you like most. And just to use the same termsthat sounds very similar to what you learned to be a pianistbut to just say you want to play the same kind of music. That’s what’s so much fun about it allI always felt we were using the same language.

So if you’re an improviser and you go play a bunch of different songs, how would you describe them as the same or the same Because that’s pretty much all you really have to say about it, right

Miguel It’s definitely what you do. I would imagine that some people might think that they don’t have to go to the piano practice as much. Maybe a couple of teachers come into their rooms and they’re working on some kind of lesson. The teacher’s not really sure about what’s going on and then he’s trying to figure out what’s working or what’s not because some other person or some way will let him get confused. No one really knows the music. It’s all part of it.
